Double ended metal halide bulbs produce light by creating an electric arc that moves through vaporized mercury and metals. These bulbs are a type of high-intensity discharge and were originally developed in the 1960s. While they are similar to mercury vapor lamps, they are more efficient and render better color than their distant cousins. Most varieties use sodium iodide to create light. Once the lamp reaches its ideal temperature, the sodium divorces the iodine, which adds orange and red colors to the light.

As a general rule, these lamps run around 75-100 lumens per watt and have a lifespan of 6,000-15,000 hours. They are widely known as one of the single most efficient sources of white light and are used widely in overhead lighting, commercial buildings, industrial buildings, parking lots, sports centers, factories, and retail stores. In some cases, they may even be used for security purposes or as the headlights on a car.

One of the most common applications of these lights, however, is commercial growing operations. They will help plants thrive and are often used in the hydroponic production of vegetables and flowers. In some cases, they are used by reef aquarists, as they provide the high-intensity light aquarium enthusiasts need to keep their corals alive and thriving.

Finally, double ended metal halide bulbs can be used for a photograph or stage lighting. In these instances, the wattage usually runs about 150, 250, 400, 575, or 1,200.

Like all of these lamps, double ended metal halide T6 bulb varieties cannot provide full light capacity before they’ve had a chance to warm up. In some cases, and depending upon lamp type, warm up can take as much as 5 minutes. During this time, the bulb will go through a variety of colors as the result of the vaporization taking place in the chamber.
