These devices are a type of high-intensity discharge lamp. 175-watt metal halide ballast devices boast two common configurations – with or without an outer envelope – and are intended to purposefully limit the level of electricity in an electric circuit. Fluorescent lamps are an example of this technology at work. Without this device inside of the bulb, the levels of current running through the tube would reach destructive and dangerous levels due to the principles of negative differential resistance.

These devices vary widely in design, complexity, and wattage. Some are as simple as a resistor while others are as complex as a high-intensity discharge lamp. They are most commonly used when an electrical load loses voltage when the current increases. If devices with these characteristics were hooked up to an around-the-clock voltage supply, they would draw higher and higher levels of current until they either destroyed themselves or ruin the power supply.

Fortunately, there’s a simple fix for this would-be problem. By installing the 175-watt metal halide ballast, the current can be limited, and the proper operation of the negative-resistance device can be maintained.

One of the most popular uses of the 175-watt metal halide is for beginning reef aquarium enthusiasts. The reason for this is that these devices generate light by creating an arc that runs between the device’s two inner electrodes. This produces a huge level of energy and, as such, the outer jacket of the device is often fashioned from borosilicate glass to cut down on UV emission and make the bulb safe for aquarium use.
