Indoor Riding Arena Lighting

Indoor Riding Arena Lighting

Lighting is diverse field with many possible applications and a myriad of specialized products. When it comes to indoor riding arena applications, there are many lighting options that can meet the unique needs of this area.

There are several riding area lighting options that would work for indoor riding arena applications from pulse start metal halide lighting or fluorescent high bay lights based on the needs and ceiling height of the riding areas. A general rule of thumb is that the best light for most areas over 15 feet tall are either a 4 lamp t5ho high bay fixture or a 6 lamp t8 high bay lighting fixture. These two fixtures would cover about 250-300 square feet at 15-foot ceiling height and about 300-400 square feet at 20-foot ceiling heights. When using these lighting fixtures, a good suggestion for color temperature on the lamps would be 4100 to 5000 kelvin to brighten the riding area to its full potential.

Aside from the technical specifications of the light, there are a few other things to keep in mind for the best lighting solution for this area.

• Consider the horse. If you are looking for lighting in an area where your horse will spend the majority of their time, you want to make sure the lighting is safe. Horses can be seriously injured from shards of glass if a bulb above their heads were to burst. In fact, horses have been known to rear up and strike the bulb with their head. A good tip is to choose lighting with either shatter proof lens covers or durable metal cages surrounding the bulb to avoid this scenario.

• Along the same lines as the above principle, make sure you hang lighting high up, taking the horse into consideration. You don’t want bulbs that will stay too close to the horse and cause discomfort or added heat.

• Choose an appropriate color rendering for your space needs. This factor might not seem that important in the grand scheme of needs, but when dealing with equestrian settings, the right color rendering allows the light to be the right rendering to show the horse’s color and make it easier to spot potential health concerns. A dimly lit riding arena or stable is bad for the horse and the rider. It also poses a safety concern due to lack of visibility.

• Choose outdoor lighting options in terms of durability. Even though it is an indoor space, it is a rougher indoor area typically packed with sand, dust, and moisture. A well-gasketed UL listed option will be longer lasting and offer dependable performance for years.
