Closet Lighting

Closet Lighting

As with any area of the home, the closet requires ample lighting to be truly effective and livable. When you can’t see, you can’t find the essentials of getting dressed which can be a real pain. Here are a few tips on closet lighting to help you achieve a well-lit, functional space for your living needs.

1. Consider sensor lights

One of the best tips for closet lighting is to consider sensor lighting. While we often think of sensor lighting as an outdoor concept, this type of solution can be quite useful inside the home, too. Sensor lighting is activated by motion so when you enter your closet, the light will automatically come on and turn off when you exit. This is a great way to add some ease of use to any closet.

2. Use the space the right way

Too many times people try to install lofty lighting fixtures that, while beautiful, are terribly out of place. If you have a larger closet, installing a beautiful chandelier style lighting fixture may be on your to-do list. However, if you are working with a smaller space, you need to adjust your expectations in terms of fixture type and size. The most important thing to remember is to light for the space you have, not the space you wish you had. If you have a smaller closet, consider some overhead rope lighting placed on the shelves to add extra lighting to the existing fixture. For medium-sized closets, experiment with adding an extra fixture of similar size and style to the existing one with an even distance between the two.

3. Decide on the color temperature

The color temperature of any lighting fixture can play a role in your mood. When it comes to a closet, this can be even more impactful. Since the color temperature is closely related to the way colors of objects are viewed, you will want to keep this factor in mind. If you choose a color that is too warm in temperature, everything will look dingy and it might make your apparel seem less flattering to you. With a cooler tone for a clear white output, you will get a better overall effect for your closet.

4. Avoid incandescent bulbs

While incandescent bulbs may seem like a suitable solution, it is better to avoid this type. Any type of bulb which produces a lot of heat isn’t a smart idea for such a small space. It is better to opt for CFL or even LED for the best choice in terms of heat output.

5. Light from above for better visibility

When choosing lighting, it may be tempting to use the space on the floor to create lighting that is unique or more on the ambient side. However, you have to be careful with this type of closet lighting. If you light from below with a light that is too focused or too high performing, you will be creating issues such as shadows, glares, and harshness overall. It is better to light from overhead for closets to avoid this and use floor lighting sparingly and only in gentle tones for ambiance.
