While many people tout LED technology as the best for lighting large spaces with maximum efficiency, fluorescent are not out of the lighting game just yet. With newer fluorescent lighting electronic ballasts, update your lighting without a complete overhaul. People will often comment that their older fluorescent have become too noisy. They incorrectly assume that means it is time to replace the fixture.
The problem of a slightly noisy fluorescent fixture can be easily solved with the use of an electronic ballast. Most older models of fluorescent come with a magnetic ballast which is attributed to the somewhat unpleasant humming sound of this type of fixture fixtures. With fluorescent lighting electronic ballasts, you can remove that sound altogether. They can be used with a variety of fixture sizes and specifications. When looking to update your older ballast or switch over to a quieter solution from a metal halide for instance, the use of fluorescent lighting electronic ballasts might be the answer.
The range of temperature and color rendering are comparable between a metal halide and a fluorescent with an electronic ballast. However, these fluorescent ballasts offer a better light spread, quieter operation, and they will typically pull a lower wattage than comparable models such as metal halides. Since you are saving more on wattages, these ballast types make your fixture eligible for a variety of rebates as well. This is a great way to get a return on your investment while upgrading your lighting to a quieter, more efficient option. It should be noted that your newer fluorescent most likely already came equipped with an electronic ballast. Magnetic ballasts are typically found in older versions of this lighting type, but it will depend on the fixture itself. Obviously, if you are hearing the humming sound associated with a magnetic ballast, chances are that is what is already installed in your fixture.
There is no denying that updating to an electronic ballast has great benefits over your older magnetic ballasts or even switching to a metal halide. Not only are they more efficient with direct results in noise pollution, they are also long-lasting with little to no upkeep required.
