Types of High Bay LED Lights

There are several types of fixtures available for high bay LED lights.  These include architectural high bays, high bay shop lights, and grid-mount high bays that each offer different light qualities and coverage styles. Each type of high bay lighting fixture offers different light qualities and coverage styles:

  • Round (UFO) - Easy to install and a strong, manageable beam angle
  • Linear - Best for spaces with ceilings ranging from 20 to 45 feet tall to provide sufficient light
  • Vapor Tight - Keep out moisture and dust and are UL Wet Location compliant

LED high bay fixtures provide clear, uniform illumination of what is below it with little glare. Different kinds of reflectors can accomplish different kinds of lighting results, also. Aluminum reflectors make light from the fixtures flow directly down to the floor, while prismatic reflectors create a more diffused lighting useful for illuminating shelves and other elevated objects in a space.

Benefits of LED High Bay Lights

High bay LED lights are an affordable way to get high-quality warehouse lighting for the toughest jobs, so you can provide visibility to any space without issue. One reason why people are switching from metal halides or incandescent fixtures to high bay LED lights is the lower energy costs. LED lighting lasts 25 times longer and uses 75% less energy than traditional bulbs. But energy efficiency isn't the only benefit. Some non-LED fixtures may be a bit less expensive upfront, but you will save money in the long run when using LED high bays. Here's why:

  • Reduced Environmental Impact - Warehouse lighting LED solutions use less power to achieve the same, if not better, results than comparable lighting solutions. They are also free of harmful elements, such as mercury, that are found in other lights, and they are recyclable. This reduces their environmental impact and disposal cost. LED high bay lights last for an exceptionally long time so they need to be replaced less frequently.
  • Enhanced Efficiency - LEDs are an efficient option in terms of energy consumed for lumens put out — they offer some of the highest lumen outputs to wattage and energy consumption on the market. High bay LED lights consume upwards of 90% less energy than incandescent options.
  • Lower Utility Costs - Because LEDs use less power to get the same (or better) results than fluorescent or metal halide lights, they provide reduced utility costs. They also burn at a cooler temperature so they won't negatively impact your cooling unit.
  • Longevity - LED high bay lights last for years with some options offering upwards of 100,000 hours of illumination. They are also incredibly durable because there is no filament. Less frequent replacement positively impacts the environment and reduces labor costs.
  • Solid Return on Investment - The higher initial cost of LED high bay lights is offset by reduced energy bills, rebates and longer lifespans.
  • Improved Safety - High bay LED lights don't produce any mercury or UV rays. Plus, their lower operating temperature makes them safer to handle without fear of burns.

High bay LED lights are also aesthetically pleasing — the diverse styles of high bay lighting provide multiple options for complementing the design of your building.

If you currently have fluorescent high bays and aren't ready to replace the fixtures, retrofit kits are available so you can achieve the benefits associated with LED high bay lights without a total overhaul of your lighting system.

FAQs About High Bay Lights

LED high bay lights have a reputation for excellence due to years of innovation and quality designs which enable them to outperform competing non-LED models. Many features separate LED high bay shop lights from traditional models, but not all LED high bay lights are created equal. To ensure accurate and exceptional energy ratings, look for DLC certification.

Learn more about incorporating LED high bay lighting into your illumination plan with the following answers to common questions. If you need more information, you can review our High Bay Lights Buying Guide or reach out to our customer service team — we're here to help!

What are High Bay LED Lights?

High bay LED lights are used to illuminate spaces with high ceilings. That usually means ceilings ranging from 20 feet to approximately 45 feet. Low-bay lights, on the other hand, are used for ceilings 20 feet and under. Because a high-ceiling location has more space to fill, a high bay light by definition is a powerful light source that can brighten up a large area.

Should You Use Lighting Controls With High Bay LED Lights?

While high bay LED lights for warehouse spaces are energy-efficient, directly installing them to your ceilings without lighting controls can be incredibly wasteful. Lighting automation controls, such as motion sensors, dusk to dawn photocells, and dimmers, are the perfect addition to your lighting system because they not only reduce your costs but also make the system easier to use. High bay lighting controls allow you to quickly start or shut off the fixtures, and using high bay occupancy sensors can also prevent accidental light usage when the facility is closed. Additionally, having a set of controls with your system allows you to dim the lights to a more energy-saving brightness.

Where is LED High Bay Lighting Used?

Given their placement, high bay led fixtures and lights are natural fits for commercial and industrial uses. Industrial high bay shop lights can be used for both commercial and residential operations. High bay LED lights are appropriate for diverse applications such as:

LED high bay light fixtures have multiple applications across a range of industries because they are excellent for illuminating any place that needs lighting from an elevation of more than 20 feet. Warehouse LED light fixtures are even used in hangars and other large, cavernous buildings because of their ability to add quality illumination at a low cost.

How Many High Bay LED Lights Do I Need?

The number of high bay light fixtures needed is determined by the:

  • Size of the space
  • Ceiling height
  • Building usage

For a ceiling height of 10 feet or lower, we recommend high bay LED lights that are around 100 watts and deliver 10000-12000 lumens. For ceiling heights of between 12-20 feet, high bay lights in the 125-175 watt (12000-21000 lumens) range are most commonly used. In areas requiring higher light levels and less glair such as low mounting heights, Reflectors and lenses can be added to our UFO fixtures.

As the ceiling height increases, the wattage and the lumen output should also increase:

  • 8-10 feet = 80-100 watts (10,000-12,000 lumens)
  • 12-20 feet = 125-175 watt (12,000-21,000 lumens)
  • 18-25 feet = 200-300 watt (22,000-35,000 lumens)
  • 20-30+ feet = 300-400 watt (35,000-47,000+ lumens)

Recommended spacing for LED high bay lights are as follows:

  • 10-foot ceiling — 12-15 feet apart
  • 20-foot ceiling — 15-19 feet apart
  • 30+ foot ceiling — 19-35 feet apart

However, the dimensions of the room or building you are lighting and its use will ultimately determine how many high bay LED lights are required.

What are the different wattages for High Bay Lights?

The illumination requirements for the space will determine the difference between high-powered and low-wattage high bay lights. Low wattage high bay lights are ideal for small areas and will be the most efficient. Medium wattage is preferred for commercial and industrial applications such as warehouses and retail spaces. High-powered high bay LED lights are best for sports arenas, indoor stadium lighting, and warehouse facilities requiring higher illumination because of high ceilings. See our selection of different high bay light wattages including our tube ready high bay led lights.

Low Wattage (90-200 Watts)

Medium Wattage (240-277 Watts)

High Powered High Bay Lights (400-500 Watts)

Why Is Cross-Over Lighting Important?

It's essential to use proper spacing when installing high bay LED lights in your facility to avoid wasting energy by making one area too bright and another too dark. Cross-over lighting involves placing fixtures in different locations (ideally three or more) to achieve more uniform illumination. Lighting from multiple angles prevents hot spots and greatly minimizes shadows in the facility.
