Frequently Asked Questions

What are shop lights?

Shop light fixtures are overhead lights used to illuminate any area in which a task is performed. Performing certain tasks with proper illumination requires that these lights have the following qualities:

  •  High color rendering, a color rendering index (CRI) rating of at least 80
  •  High color temperature (CCT), usually 4000K or 5000K
  •  High lumen output, which is dependent on the amount of space or fixture mounting height used for the given task
  • Shop lights can be surface mounted or hung with hooks, chains or cables.

Where are shop lights used?

Shop lights can be used for both commercial and residential applications. Examples include garages, studios, workshops, utility rooms, sheds, storage rooms, auto repair shops, retail stores, groceries and small warehouses.

What are the different types of Shop Lights?

Shop lights usually use fluorescent or LED technologies to provide illumination.Fluorescent lights are less expensive than LEDs but have a shorter lifespan and can begin to flicker or buzz as they get older. Modern LED lighting, on the other hand is more expensive to purchase initially but has a longer lifespan and is much more energy efficient which saves on energy and maintenance costs. They also provide better color rendering.

Shop lighting also comes in different shapes and styles of fixtures to suit specific light qualities and coverage styles. Among these shapes and styles are 4- and 8-foot linear strip lights, round low bays and high bays, UFO low bays and high bays and grid-mount low bays and high bays. Low bay lights are used for areas with a ceiling under 20 feet and high bays are used for areas with ceilings 20 to 45 feet high.

Some linear strip lights can be linked together and can run power from one fixture to the next for continuous row mounting. There is no need to hardwire or plug in each shop light to the power source making them ideal for end-to-end ceiling lighting.

Depending the environment of the area being illuminated, damp or wet rated shop lights can be used so that internal components are protected from moisture.

What are the benefits of LED Shop Lights?

LED lighting technology has developed to the point that it can overcome most all of the drawbacks of other technologies.

  •  LED Shop Lighting quality is superior in terms of color rendering, color temperature and lumen output (compared to wattage used).
  • LED Shop Lights have a much longer lifespan which means that the lights need to be replaced less frequently than other types. This is particularly important when it comes to high bay lighting which requires lifts or scaffolding to reach the fixtures.
  •  Although LED shop lighting is more expensive initially upon point of purchase, costs are more than made up in the long term due to the fact that they consume much less energy than conventional lights. This saves on utility costs over time. They also don't waste energy emitted as heat.

Finally, other types of lights are omnidirectional, which means that they produce a 360 degree output. With shop light fixtures, the light needs to be directed down and out towards the floor or task area. Much of this is wasted or needs to be directed using a reflector. LED shop lights have a more concentrated light beam which means that nothing is wasted.
