There is no denying the overwhelming popularity of LED lights over the last several years. From residential and commercial settings to industrial warehouses, there is a LED application for seemingly every need and the options only continue to expand into new territory. While this lighting solution is heralded as being more energy efficient than other options, most people don’t actually know why they are the better choice. What makes LEDs so efficient?
A LED is so efficient because of the way it operates and the way it handles the output it generates. While other light solutions, such as incandescent bulbs, consume higher watts to get the lumen output specified, LED lights use fewer watts because of the way they operate. For example, a 40-watt incandescent bulb can produce up to 500 lumens whereas a LED can use 15 watts to produce 1500 lumens. The fact that a LED uses lower wattage to create more lumen than comparable lighting solutions is only one of the answers to why LEDs are so efficient.
The other aspect that makes a LED more efficient is the way it handles the output it creates. The energy that is converted from watts to lumen takes up the majority of the energy consumed and produced. While other lighting solutions will lose most of the energy they create, a LED will be able to convert a higher percentage, sometimes as much as 80%, of the energy it consumes into illumination. To compare this, an incandescent option will take the majority of the energy it consumes and actually creates more heat than light. In fact, an incandescent will only produce around 20% light from the energy it consumes which means 80% of that energy is lost in heat.
Another aspect that makes a LED solution such a smart choice, aside from their energy aspects, is that they will last for years of reliable use. They operate in a way that eliminates strain on the internal components. Since there is lower heat emitted, the internal driver is less likely to burn up as it would in other high-heat emitting fixtures.
A LED solution can help to lower the costs of energy bills because they use less energy. Since they produce less heat, they can also help with cooling costs as opposed to having lights known to emit high levels of heat.
