The Room Has to Work at Two Different Light Levels

People need roughly 30 to 50 foot-candles on the table to read documents and take notes comfortably, but a projected image or a wall display needs the ambient level well below that to hold contrast. A room lit at one fixed level will always be wrong for one of its two jobs.

The practical answer is to design for the higher level and dim down, since you cannot dim above what the fixtures deliver. That means dimmable drivers throughout and, ideally, separate control zones so the fixtures nearest the screen can come down further than the ones over the table.

Coordinate fixture layout with the AV plan and any acoustic treatment before ordering. Ceiling speakers, projector mounts, air diffusers, and acoustic panels all compete for the same grid, and lighting is usually the element asked to move.
