Start With Indoor or Outdoor
Almost every decision downstream follows from this one. Indoor and outdoor sports lighting use different fixtures, different mounting methods and different budgets, even for the same sport.
- Indoor facilities — gymnasiums, field houses, indoor courts and converted warehouse space — run on high bay or low bay fixtures mounted at whatever height the existing structure allows. Beam distribution is chosen to suit that ceiling: narrower optics for tall ceilings, wider for low ones. Glare off gloss flooring and impact protection are the recurring problems.
- Outdoor facilities — courts, fields and complexes — use stadium lights or flood lights mounted on poles. Here the constraints are aiming, spill onto neighboring property, dark-sky ordinances, wind loading on the poles, and trenching for power. Multi-court complexes usually share poles between adjacent playing surfaces to cut both hardware and civil work.
- Riding arenas are worth calling out separately. Footing dust settles on fixture lenses and steadily cuts output, so sealed vapor tight fixtures hold their light far better than open high bays in the same building. - Retrofits are their own category. If you are replacing metal halide, retrofit kits can often reuse existing housings or poles, which changes the economics substantially.
Light Levels: What Your Facility Actually Needs
Sports lighting is specified as maintained horizontal illuminance across the playing surface — footcandles in the United States, lux most everywhere else, and the two convert directly at 1 footcandle ≈ 10.76 lux. The table below gives typical design targets that hold across most court and field sports. Treat them as a starting point for a photometric layout, not as a specification.

Two things shift these numbers. First, the sport: a small, fast object needs more light than a large, slow one, so racquet sports sit at the higher end of a given tier while field sports sit lower. Second, the governing body: IES RP-6 is the general North American reference, but individual sport federations, state athletic associations and conferences layer their own requirements on top — and for broadcast venues, vertical illuminance toward the camera positions usually becomes the binding constraint rather than horizontal illuminance on the floor. Confirm against whichever standard governs your facility before you finalize a layout.
The Five Specs That Matter Most
Raw brightness is the specification everyone asks about and rarely the one that decides whether a facility plays well. These five matter more:
- Uniformity. The ratio of brightest to darkest point on the playing surface. A court averaging 50 footcandles with bright pools under each fixture and dim gaps between them plays worse than a court averaging 35 laid out evenly, because players' eyes readjust constantly as they move. Uniformity is the single most common failure in a cheap layout.
- Glare control. Expressed as Unified Glare Rating (UGR). Indoor courts with gloss flooring act as mirrors; outdoor courts put fixtures directly in players' upward sightlines during serves and high balls. Shielded optics, frosted lenses and aiming fixtures across the surface rather than down the line of play all reduce it.
- Color rendering (CRI). 80 or above for general play; 90 or above where the facility will be filmed or photographed. High CRI is what keeps court lines, jersey colors and the ball distinguishable at speed.
- Color temperature (CCT). 4000K to 5000K covers almost every sports application. 5000K reads crisp and daylight-like and films well; 4000K is often preferred in multipurpose halls that also host banquets, graduations or worship. CCT-selectable fixtures let you decide at install rather than at order.
- Flicker. Irrelevant for recreational play, non-negotiable for anything broadcast or streamed. Standard drivers can strobe visibly under high-speed cameras used for slow-motion replay. Broadcast-grade sports fixtures specify flicker below roughly 0.3% at high frame rates.
How Many Fixtures Will You Need?
The honest answer is that it depends on mounting height, beam distribution and surface reflectance, which is why photometric layouts exist. But you can get a planning estimate in three steps:
- Multiply your playing surface area in square feet by your target footcandles to get the lumens that need to land on the surface.
- Divide by roughly 0.7 to allow for light that never reaches the surface and for output loss over the fixture's life.
- Divide that total by the rated lumen output of the fixture you are considering to get a fixture count.

How many footcandles does a sports facility need?
Recreational and practice facilities typically target 20 to 30 footcandles (200 to 300 lux), club and school competition 30 to 50, collegiate and regional venues 50 to 75, and televised venues 100 to 200 or more. The exact figure depends on the sport and on the standard governing your facility — IES RP-6 is the general North American reference, with sport federations and athletic associations layering additional requirements.
What color temperature is best for sports lighting?
4000K to 5000K suits almost every sports application. 5000K reads crisp and daylight-like, helps players track fast-moving objects and films well, which is why it is the common specification for competition venues. 4000K is slightly warmer and often preferred in multipurpose halls that also host non-sporting events. Pair either with a CRI of 80 or higher, and 90 or higher if the space will be filmed regularly.
Do sports lights need to be flicker-free?
For recreational play, no. For anything televised or live-streamed, yes. Standard LED drivers can produce visible strobing when captured by the high-speed cameras used for slow-motion replay. Fixtures intended for broadcast venues specify flicker below roughly 0.3% at high frame rates. If there is any prospect of streaming your facility, it is far cheaper to specify it at the outset than to replace fixtures later.
Can I convert metal halide sports lighting to LED?
Usually, and it is one of the strongest cases for LED. Metal halide sports fixtures are power-hungry, lose output substantially over their life, and need a warm-up period before reaching full brightness. Switching to LED typically cuts energy consumption by half or more, delivers instant-on, and holds output far better. Existing poles can often be reused, which removes the civil work from the project — though the poles should be checked for wind loading against the new fixture weights and areas.
What is the difference between high bay and stadium lighting?
High bay fixtures are designed to hang from an indoor ceiling and throw light downward over a wide area, which suits gymnasiums, field houses and indoor courts. Stadium and flood fixtures are designed to be pole-mounted and aimed across a surface from a distance, with tighter optics and weatherproof housings, which suits outdoor courts and fields. The distinction is mounting and optics rather than brightness — both are available across a wide wattage range.
