Parking Lot Lighting

Parking Lot Lighting

The parking lot of any business is always going to be the first impression visitors will have of your operation. Make sure you make a great first impression with the right parking lot lighting applications. Here are few tips to make sure you find the right parking lot lighting applications for your business.

  • Go for high-efficiency. While many people will choose the option that costs less up front, this is not always the best decision, especially for a business that is watching their bottom line. Generally speaking, outdoor lighting that is more expensive will have better features or durability, but you should investigate the lumen output to watt consumed component as the first step in determining the right fixture.
  • Know your ratings before buying light fixtures. An IP rating will tell you under what conditions the fixture is designed to operate without losing efficiency or ability. This rating will tell you aspects such as water submersion levels, as well as dust and wind durability. Aside from this rating, you also want to check the to make sure the fixture is UL listed for wet/damp locations since it will be exposed to the elements. You also want to make sure you use lighting fixtures designed specifically for outdoor use.
  • Consider the uniformity of the lighting solution. Too many times businesses choose a fixture based solely on the lumen output, but the uniformity of the light is also impactful for areas that need high visibility such as parking lots. The uniformity is the average of lighting between the lowest light level reading and the average light level reading taken throughout the lot. You want to achieve a uniformity ratio that is around 3:1 to ensure proper illumination in this important area.
  • Know the basic types of fixtures available for outdoor lighting. Whether you are evaluating an existing lighting system or looking to install an all-new system in a new location, it is essential to know the types of lighting commonly used in lots. Low-pressure sodium lights were once a popular option that has been edged out by more modern models. They offer inadequate color rendering and give off an orange light which is a giveaway they are LPS. This lighting type is short in lifespan but isn’t too heavy on wattage consumption so it may still be seen in older parking lots. High-pressure sodium is similar in design, but improved in function with a longer lamp life and lowered energy consumption. They also have an orange-yellow tinge to the output. Metal halide fixtures offer better color rendering with a higher light output. The lamp life lasts longer than the pressure lamps, but the overall life of the fixture isn’t as long as with either low or high-pressure sodium fixtures. LED lights are the best in terms of lumen output to watts consumed with a clear, white light. They are capable of outlasting these other options as well.

Finding the right lighting solution for this important part of your location doesn’t have to be difficult. With these tips to guide you, you are sure to discover the perfect option in no time!
