Basketball Arena Lighting

Basketball Arena Lighting

When considering the right lighting solutions for any sports area, there are certain elements that need to be considered. When it comes to basketball arena lighting, those same considerations should be considered, along with a few sport specific concerns. Here are a few tips on choosing and planning basketball arena lighting for the best results.

1. Choose lower wattages over higher wattages.

While visibility for the audience should be a key aspect of any lighting plan, the visibility of the players is equally important. When you choose lower wattage options, you can ensure the lights won’t be too blinding for the players. A good rule is to remember that for this area of lighting, the horizontal light levels should be around 80 footcandles.

2. Reduce glare as much as possible.

Since a basketball court is naturally made with a glossy finish, reducing glare is paramount for this area. While a certain amount of glare is to be expected and is unavoidable, you can take steps to reduce some of the glare. Choosing lights with glare reduction shields is a great bet while the type of fixture also plays a role. Spotlights and floodlights are the most commonly used option. To get the most of this aspect of lighting, choose LED since it has a lower glare overall because of the way it spreads lumen more evenly instead of in one concentered output like other types of lighting.

3. Avoid placing lighting directly in the field of play.

The most concentrated point of illumination should fall outside of the field of play so that the players aren’t blinded. The outer cast of the light scope will be enough to sufficiently light the majority of the playing area.

4. Choose the right color rendering.

For any type of sports arena, it is better to opt for cooler tones such as a bluish white or white over warmer tones of yellow. Whiter toned light creates a more noticeable focal point visually for the audience while also making everything look brighter and better. While metal halide fixtures have been a mainstay in arena lighting, they offer a poor color rendering to LED options. In fact, many stadiums are switching over to LED because of the improved efficiency and the improved color rendering.
