What are LED cylinder lights used for?

Cylinder lights suit spaces where the fixture is meant to be seen as well as to light the room. Indoors they are used over reception desks, seating and bar areas, in corridors and above retail displays. Outdoors they light entrances, facades and walkways. The narrow body concentrates light on a defined area rather than spreading it across a room, which is why they are specified as accent and task fixtures rather than for general coverage.

What sizes do LED cylinder lights come in?

Diameters run from 1 inch up to 12 inches, with 4 inch and 6 inch the most commonly specified. Output scales with size: a 1 inch fixture produces around 700 lumens, a 4 inch around 1,600 to 2,500, a 6 inch around 2,600 to 5,500, and the largest models exceed 12,000 lumens. Square and rounded-corner versions are available alongside the round profile.

Can cylinder lights be used indoors and outdoors?

Not interchangeably. Indoor cylinder lights are not rated for exterior use. For an outdoor installation, choose a fixture with a wet or damp location rating and an appropriate IP rating, which has more robust construction and sealed housings built to handle weather. Many outdoor cylinders also include an integrated photocell so they switch on at dusk without separate controls.

What is the difference between downlight and up/down cylinder lights?

A downlight-only cylinder directs all its output at the surface below, which suits task areas, counters and pathways. An up and down, or direct/indirect, cylinder emits from both ends, throwing light onto the wall or ceiling as well as downward. The upward component softens the effect and stops a dark wall reading as a void above the fixture, which is why direct/indirect is often preferred on facades and in rooms with dark ceilings.

Can cylinder lights be mounted as pendants?

Many ceiling-mount cylinders can. The fixture is typically offered as a ceiling mount or with a mounting kit that converts it to a pendant, using a cord for an adjustable drop or a rigid rod for a fixed height. The important detail is that the kit is chosen as part of the SKU rather than added afterward, so decide the mounting method and drop height before the order is placed.

What is the difference between a cylinder light and a wall pack?

Both mount to a wall, but they are specified for different reasons. A wall pack is a utility fixture built to push a lot of light across a large area such as a parking lot edge or a service yard. A cylinder light is an architectural fixture: lower output, tighter distribution, and a form intended to be seen. Use a wall pack where coverage matters most and a cylinder where the look of the building matters as much as the light.

Are LED cylinder lights dimmable?

Many are, but check the control method on the specific fixture. Commercial models generally use 0–10V dimming, which is the standard for commercial installations, while smaller and residential-leaning fixtures often use Triac dimming that works with a standard wall dimmer. The two are not interchangeable, so confirm which one the fixture uses before specifying controls.
