Dimming Capability in Dining Spaces

Full-service dining rooms almost universally need dimming. The ability to pull light levels down between lunch, dinner, and private event scenarios is something ownership expects, and the electrical plan needs to account for it from the start. Most restaurant LED lighting fixtures support dimming, but driver protocol matters: 0-10V, TRIAC, and DALI all require compatible control systems, and not every dimmer works with every LED driver. Confirm the dimming protocol on the fixture spec sheet and match it to the control system before the order goes in.

NSF Listings in Commercial Kitchens

Any fixture installed above an open food preparation or storage area in a commercial kitchen is subject to NSF/ANSI Standard 2, which requires NSF listing to prevent contamination risk. This is a health code requirement that comes up during health department inspections. Commercial kitchen work surfaces typically need 30 to 50 foot-candles, with inspection and plating areas running higher. What type of fixtures work best for outdoor restaurant seating?

Outdoor dining areas exposed to rain or direct water contact require wet location-rated fixtures. Covered patios where fixtures are shielded from direct weather still need damp location ratings at a minimum. Gooseneck and barn lights are a common choice for covered patio perimeters and exterior facades. Wet-rated wall packs and area lights handle open patio and parking perimeter applications.

How does bar lighting differ from the dining room spec?

Bar areas layer multiple lighting strategies that dining rooms typically don't. Backlighting shelves and back-bar displays often call for RGB or tunable white linear fixtures to highlight products and create visual interest. Task lighting directly over the bar surface needs to be bright enough for accurate work with garnishes and pours, which is a meaningfully different target than dining room ambient levels.
