When it comes to finding the right lighting solutions, the ideal choice usually depends on the location itself. For example, there are a few things to consider when choosing the best doctor’s office lighting. Here are the things to keep in mind when planning this type of lighting plan.

• Choose the right light bulb option for your patients. Many times, doctor’s office lighting is too bright for the comfort of the patient. Especially an issue in the waiting room, too many practices choose the brightest light with the highest lumen output and it can be off-putting to the patient. In fact, studies have shown that patients experience higher levels of stress in the waiting room than in the actual exam room, and the lighting has been proven to increase that stress. A good rule of thumb is to opt for a lower lumen output in waiting rooms to ensure a peaceful environment. You don’t want it to be dark and uninviting, but it shouldn’t add to the anxiety that already accompanies a doctor’s visit.

• Opt for natural light as much as possible. In areas such as the waiting room, natural light has been proven to help eliminate anxiety for patients, as well as help to elevate the moods of staff. If your practice has access to large windows, let the natural light be your guide when deciding on artificial lighting solutions.

• Choose lights that come close to mimicking natural light for the best results. While compact fluorescent were once the industry standard, O-LED lights offer an improved color rendering that allows you to create softer lighting indoors. An organic light emitting diode (O-LED) is the closest to natural sunlight and can be adjusted easily. For example, you can have warmer illumination during the morning and cooler light temperatures during the afternoon into the end of the office day to effectively mimic natural sunlight changes throughout the day.

• Consider LEDs if O-LED is too expensive. While O-LED offers the best color rendering that is adjustable, they aren’t long-lasting and they are costlier up front whereas traditional LED fixtures are more affordable and will last for many years of dependable use.

• Mix and match lighting for the best doctor’s office lighting solution. For example, incorporating not only recessed fixtures for adequate visibility, but also wall mounted fixtures with up light, will create a warmer environment and be easier on the eyes of your patients.
