Long linear LED runs crossing a T-grid ceiling above rows of workstations in an open corporate office

The Challenge: Long Runs in a Grid Built for Panels

Open offices are usually lit with troffers, one per tile opening, which leaves the ceiling looking like a grid of bright rectangles. This office wanted long, unbroken lines of light over the rows of desks, and it wanted that look to carry into the front of the office without replacing the ceiling.

A T-grid ceiling is laid out for office ceiling lights that drop into a full tile opening. Linear runs cross tile lines, so the fixtures had to sit flush across the grid instead of filling one opening at a time.

The Solution: BEAMLED With a Flange Kit

The WareLight BEAMLED series offers several mounting options, including a Recessed Flange Kit for a recessed install with a visible trim. For this office, the flange kit was adapted to fit the T-grid ceiling. BEAMLED fixtures can also be linked into continuous runs of up to 600W, so the runs could stretch across the open floor.

The series is wattage and CCT selectable, so output and color temperature can be matched to each area:

  • Lengths: 2, 4, 6, and 8 ft, linkable up to 600W per run
  • Wattage Selectable: 15W to 100W depending on length
  • CCT Selectable: 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, or 5000K
  • 0–10V Dimming on 120–277V
  • Mounting Options: Suspended, wall mount, T-bar mount, mud flange, or recessed flange
  • cULus Listed, DLC Premium, Damp Location Rated, with a 5-Year Warranty

The Results

On the open floor, long linear runs cross the grid above the rows of workstations, with daylight from the perimeter windows filling in around them. In reception, the same runs carry through the front of the space and into the glass-walled private office, so the whole floor has one consistent look.

Sean worked with the customer to bring linear lighting into a grid ceiling instead of settling for standard troffers.

Why Linear Lighting Works in Open Offices

  • Continuous Runs Over Workstations: Light follows the desk rows instead of falling in tile-sized patches.
  • Works With the Existing Ceiling: No drywall conversion or ceiling replacement.
  • One Look From Reception to the Back Office: The same fixture carries through every space.
  • Selectable Wattage and CCT: Output and color temperature can be set per area.

FAQs About Office and Drop Ceiling Lighting

What is the best lighting for an open office?

Open offices are commonly lit with continuous linear fixtures or evenly spaced troffers that keep light levels consistent across desks. Linear runs over workstation rows spread light along the desks and avoid the patchwork look of a full panel grid.

Can linear LED fixtures be installed in a drop ceiling?

Yes. WareLight BEAMLED fixtures offer a T-Bar Mount Kit for surface or suspended mounting from a ceiling grid. On this project, the flange kit was adapted so the fixtures sit flush in the T-grid.

What types of office ceiling lights work in a T-grid?

Common options are troffers and flat panels that fill a full tile opening, linear fixtures mounted to or suspended from the T-bar grid, and recessed linear runs that cross the grid with a mounting kit adapted for the grid.

How long can BEAMLED linear runs be?

BEAMLED fixtures come in 2, 4, 6, and 8 ft lengths and can be linked into continuous runs of up to 600W, so long runs across an open floor can be built from multiple fixtures.

What color temperature is best for an office?

Offices are commonly lit at 3500K to 4000K for a neutral white, with 5000K used where a cooler, brighter look is preferred. BEAMLED fixtures are CCT selectable at 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, or 5000K.

What mounting options are available for BEAMLED fixtures?

Suspended mounting with a 10 ft aircraft cable kit is included. Wall Mount, T-Bar Mount, Mud Flange, and Recessed Flange kits are also available for wall, grid, drywall, and recessed installations.
