The Challenge: One Fixture Type, Several Different Rooms
An office fit-out rarely presents as a single lighting problem. Open workspace, meeting rooms and circulation each want something different from the ceiling, and specifying a separate product for every one of them drives up both cost and lead time.
There is a second problem specific to offices, and it is the one occupants actually complain about. Screens. A ceiling full of bright downward-facing fixtures puts reflections on every monitor in the room, and the usual response, dimming everything down, leaves the space feeling like a cave with the upper half in shadow.
The contractor on this project wanted a single fixture family that could handle all of it, look deliberate rather than utilitarian, and adapt to the shape of each area rather than forcing the layout onto a grid.
The Solution: Direct/Indirect Linears, Linked Into Shapes
Working with Megan at Warehouse Lighting, the contractor specified twelve WareLight direct/indirect suspended linear fixtures in sandy black: ten 8-foot units and two 4-foot units. Alongside them, ten L corner fittings in matte black.
The direct/indirect distribution is what solves the screen problem. These fixtures emit both downward onto work surfaces and upward onto the ceiling, where the light bounces back as soft ambient fill. You get usable light on the desk without the hard downward glare that reflects off monitors, and the ceiling stays bright so the room doesn't read as a cave.

The L corner fitting is doing more work here than its name suggests. Ten of them, combined with twelve fixtures, produce square pendant forms, right-angle corners and continuous straight runs, all from a single accessory SKU. Four fixtures and four corner fittings make a closed square; two fixtures and one fitting make a corner that turns with the wall.
The fitting is not a passive bracket either. Each one carries its own LED module and wiring and is CCT selectable to match the fixtures, so the corner stays lit rather than leaving a dark gap where two runs meet. On a square pendant that is the difference between a continuous illuminated frame and four separate bars with shadows at the joints.
That matters on a budget. A custom architectural lighting layout usually implies custom fixtures and a long lead time. Here it came out of a stock catalog fixture and one accessory.

Both fixtures are percentage adjustable on the direct/indirect split, with four preset up/down ratios — 0/100, 30/70, 40/60 and 50/50 — and the up and down components can be dimmed and color-tuned independently of each other. On an office job that means the same fixture can push more light upward in a meeting room and more downward over desks, set at install rather than decided at order.
The 5-wire power feed is worth pausing on. Two of those conductors are the 0–10V control pair, which is what makes the dimming work. If you are quoting a retrofit rather than a new build, confirm there is a path for those control conductors before the job is priced.
The Results
The finished installation reads as an architectural design rather than a lighting layout. The square configurations became focal points in their own right, and the L-shaped runs follow the geometry of the surrounding space instead of ignoring it.
Megan worked with the contractor through fixture selection and ordering. After the install was complete, his verdict was short:
“Lights worked out wonderful.”
The practical outcome is that one product family covered every area of the office. Selectable wattage and CCT meant output and color could be tuned per zone at install rather than locked in at specification, 0–10V dimming means the space can be adjusted after occupancy, and the linkable design meant the layout could respond to the building rather than the other way around.
Specifying Suspended Linear Lighting for an Office
A few things this project illustrates that carry over to most office fit-outs:
- Direct/indirect earns its place in any screen-heavy room: uplight onto the ceiling gives you ambient fill without the monitor reflections a pure downlight produces.
- One connector type goes a long way: L corner fittings alone produce squares, corners and turns. You do not need the full connector range to get a custom-looking layout.
- Check whether the connector is lit: a fitting with its own LED module keeps a square or corner continuously illuminated. A passive bracket leaves a dark joint.
- Mix lengths rather than forcing one: 8-foot units cover open areas efficiently; 4-foot units fill the spaces where a longer fixture would overshoot.
- Selectable wattage and CCT save a second order: tuning output and color per zone at install beats specifying three products for three room types.
- Account for the 0–10V control wiring: the power feed on these fixtures is 5-wire for a reason. On a retrofit, verify a path exists for the control conductors before quoting.
- Check finish compatibility before designing runs: acoustic panel and wood finish versions of this fixture cannot be linked or used with connectors. If continuous runs or shapes are part of the design, the finish decision has to come first.
- Decide the mounting method at order time: suspended, mud flange, recessed flange, wall and T-bar are all offered, and the choice is part of the order rather than a later addition.

FAQs About Office Linear Lighting
What does direct/indirect mean, and why choose it for an office?
A direct/indirect fixture emits light both downward toward the work surface and upward onto the ceiling, where it reflects back into the room as soft ambient light. The result is more even illumination with less glare on monitors and polished surfaces, which is why it has become the standard for open offices and conference rooms. A pure downlight gives brighter task surfaces but leaves the upper half of the room dark, an effect often called the cave look.
Can suspended linear fixtures be arranged into squares and custom shapes?
Yes. Connector fittings physically join multiple fixtures into shapes. L, X, Y, T and V connectors are each sold separately and are available in black and white to match the fixture body. This project used L corner fittings alone, which is enough to build closed squares, right-angle corners and continuous runs. Four fixtures joined by four fittings form a square; two fixtures and one fitting form a corner. Each fitting carries its own LED module, so the corner stays lit rather than leaving a dark joint.
Can the uplight and downlight be controlled separately?
On this fixture, yes. It offers four preset up and down distribution ratios of 0/100, 30/70, 40/60 and 50/50, and the up and down components can be dimmed and color-tuned independently. That allows warmer ambient uplight alongside cooler task downlight, or separate dimming zones from a single fixture.
Are these fixtures dimmable, and what control do they use?
Both the 4-foot and 8-foot fixtures on this project are 0–10V dimmable, which is the standard control method for commercial installations. The power feed cable is 5-wire: three conductors for line voltage and two for the 0–10V control pair. On a retrofit that detail matters, because if the existing conduit only carries line voltage, the control conductors have to be pulled before dimming will work.
Do all finish options support linking and connectors?
No, and this catches people out. The acoustic panel and wood finish versions of this fixture are not compatible with linking or connector pieces. If continuous runs or custom shapes are part of the design, the finish has to be chosen with that in mind before the order is placed.
Should I use 4-foot or 8-foot linear fixtures in an office?
It depends on the run length rather than the room size. An 8-foot fixture covers open floor more efficiently and means fewer suspension points and fewer connections. A 4-foot fixture fits where an 8-foot run would overshoot the space, such as short corners, narrower rooms or the closing side of a square. Most projects end up mixing both, as this one did with ten 8-foot units and two 4-foot units.
What mounting options are available besides suspension?
The suspended mount is included and hangs the fixture on an adjustable aircraft cable kit. Beyond that, a mud flange gives a flush, flangeless recessed look in a drywall ceiling; a recessed flange is also recessed but leaves a visible trim around the opening, which simplifies installation; and wall-mount and T-bar options cover vertical surfaces and standard drop ceiling grids. The mounting method is selected as part of the order.
