The Challenge: An Open Ceiling Hides Nothing

The commons was built with an exposed, blacked-out ceiling — no grid, no tile, nowhere for a fixture to disappear into. That is a deliberate architectural choice, and it changes what the lighting has to accomplish. Every fixture in the room is visible from every seat, so it either becomes part of the design or it quietly undermines it.

The room also had to work as more than a showpiece. Students study there, faculty meet there, and prospective families are walked through it on campus tours. That means genuinely even light from wall to wall — enough to read a textbook at a corner armchair, not just enough to make the space photograph well.

Then there is everything attached to it. The commons opens onto a corridor lined with program banners that need clean, consistent illumination, and a stairwell that has to be lit to a functional standard without turning into a utility space bolted onto the end of a designed one.

The default answer to a black open ceiling is a grid of recessed cans or a run of strip lights. Recessed is not an option without a plenum to recess into, and strip lighting reads as warehouse rather than campus. What the college needed was a fixture that looks good enough to be on display, puts out enough light to actually do the job, and comes in enough variations to carry the same look into the corridor and down the stairs.

The Solution: Black Housings, Visible Light

Warehouse Lighting supplied two WareLight products: six 48-inch BEAMPEND Series LED round pendants over the seating clusters, and twelve 8-foot LINA Series suspended linear fixtures running the length of the ceiling and out into the circulation spaces.

Both were specified in black housings. That is the counterintuitive choice and the reason the room works: against a ceiling painted black, a black fixture recedes almost entirely. What a visitor registers is not a ring-shaped fixture but a ring of light.

The opal lens on the 48-inch pendants is what completes the effect. It diffuses the output into an even band of light rather than a visible row of diodes, so the ring reads as a continuous circle from anywhere in the room. Take away either the black housing or the diffusing lens and you get a fixture hanging from a ceiling instead of a shape made of light.

The division of labor is straightforward. The pendants do the visual work: they cluster over the seating groups, mark those zones as destinations, and give the room its identity. The linear runs do the volume work: continuous 8-foot sections spread light evenly along the length of the space instead of dropping it in pools, which is what keeps the far corners as usable as the center.

Because both series carry selectable wattage, selectable CCT and 0–10V dimming, the college covered three different room conditions with a single pair of fixtures and tuned the output per area rather than sourcing three separate products.

BEAMPEND Series LED Round Pendants. The college used the 48-inch model, six of them, in black with an opal lens. Wattage is field-selectable at 80, 90 or 100W and CCT at 3000K, 3500K, 4000K or 5000K, with up to 10,000 lumens at the top setting, 0–10V dimming and 120–277V input. The canopy kit ships with the fixture. The series also comes in 24-inch and 36-inch diameters, in white as well as black, and in RGBW versions where color control is wanted for events.

LINA Series 8-Foot Suspended Linear Fixtures. Twelve of these, also in black. Just 2 inches wide, adjustable direct/indirect, with wattage selectable at 40, 60, 80 or 100W and the same four CCT settings, rated at 115 lumens per watt, 0–10V dimming and 120–277V input. Each ships with a canopy kit and a 6-foot five-wire power feed cable. A 4-foot version is available for shorter runs and tighter spaces like the stairwell landing.

What makes LINA work in a space like this is the run hardware. End-to-end connection brackets join sections into continuous lines with no visible break, and 90° and 120° L connector kits let a run turn a corner and keep going — which is how a single lighting gesture follows the building from the commons into the corridor. Half-circle and quarter-circle sections are available in the same series where a run needs to curve.

The two series have different form factors and different accessory sets, but they overlap where it matters for a shared ceiling: the same black and white finish options, the same 120–277V input, and the same selectable wattage, selectable CCT and 0–10V dimming. Matching on finish and color temperature is what lets a ring and a straight line read as one decision rather than two.

The Results

The finished space does everything it needed to. The pendants give the commons a clear architectural identity that visitors notice immediately, while the linear runs deliver the even, unremarkable coverage that makes the room genuinely usable for studying and meeting. The corridor and stairwell carry the same fixtures and the same black-housing treatment, so the whole area reads as one project rather than a lit feature room with functional spaces attached.

For the college, there is a practical payoff underneath the visual one. Two series from one brand means a short parts list, one finish to match on any future phase, and selectable wattage and CCT if a space gets repurposed — changes that can be made at the fixture instead of through a reorder.

Why This Approach Works on a Campus

College and university buildings put an unusual set of demands on a lighting package: student-facing spaces have to look considered, back-of-house spaces have to be cheap to run, and facilities teams have to maintain all of it for decades. What are LED round pendant lights used for?

Round pendants are used where lighting is also meant to be seen — lobbies, student commons, reception areas, cafes, conference rooms and open offices. The ring form gives a room a visual anchor that a flat panel or downlight cannot, which is why they are specified over seating clusters and gathering points rather than spread evenly across a ceiling. Larger diameters also deliver serious output: a 48" BEAMPEND round pendant produces up to 10,000 lumens.

What size round pendant light do I need?

Size to the zone below it rather than the room as a whole. A 24" pendant at up to 4,000 lumens suits a small seating group, a booth or a compact meeting table. A 36" at up to 8,000 lumens works over a larger table or a lounge cluster. A 48" at up to 10,000 lumens is used where the pendant is the primary light source for an area or needs to hold its own in a tall, open space — this college used six 48-inch pendants across the seating clusters in an open commons. Ceiling height matters as much as diameter: the higher the mounting point, the larger the fixture needs to be to read correctly from the floor.

Can you mix round pendants and linear fixtures in the same space?

Yes, and it is usually the better approach in a large open room. Linear fixtures spread light along a run and handle even general illumination; pendants concentrate light and define zones. They do not need to come from the same product series — the BEAMPEND round pendants and LINA linear fixtures in this project are two separate series. What matters is matching the things the eye picks up: finish, visual weight, and color temperature. Specify both in the same finish and set them to the same CCT, and the ceiling reads as one decision.

Should fixtures be black or white on an exposed ceiling?

Exposed and painted-black ceilings leave nowhere to conceal a fixture, so surface-mounted and suspended architectural fixtures are the standard answer — recessed products need a plenum that is not there. From there the finish is a design decision with two opposite results. A white housing reads as deliberate contrast, drawing visible geometry against a dark plane. A black housing does the reverse: it recedes into the ceiling so only the illuminated lens is visible, which is how a round pendant becomes an apparently floating ring of light. This college chose black on both fixture families for exactly that effect. A diffusing lens matters either way — an opal lens turns the output into an even band rather than a row of visible diodes.

What color temperature works best in a college commons or lounge?

Most gathering and lounge spaces sit between 3000K and 4000K — warm enough to feel comfortable to sit in, neutral enough to study under. Corridors and stairwells are often taken to 4000K for a more alert, functional feel. Fixtures with selectable CCT let one product cover both: the BEAMPEND and LINA fixtures used here offer 3000K, 3500K, 4000K and 5000K, set at install rather than at the time of order.

Can suspended linear fixtures be joined into continuous runs?

Yes. LINA Series fixtures use end-to-end mechanical connection brackets to join 4-foot and 8-foot sections into an unbroken line, and 90° and 120° L connector kits to turn corners without ending the run. Half-circle and quarter-circle sections are available in the same series for curved layouts. This is what lets a single line of light follow a building through connected spaces.

Are round pendants and linear fixtures dimmable?

Both the BEAMPEND and LINA Series include 0–10V dimming, which is the standard control method for commercial LED fixtures. That matters in multi-use spaces such as a commons that runs bright for daytime study and lower for evening events. Wattage is separately selectable on the fixture — 80/90/100W on the 48-inch pendant and 40/60/80/100W on the 8-foot linear — so the baseline output can also be set at install.
