Case Study: Round Pendant Lighting for a Temporary Event Wine Bar

A hospitality space built for a single sporting event has a problem a permanent bar does not. It has to look finished on day one, it has to come apart cleanly at the end, and nothing it is attached to was designed to carry weight.

For a branded wine bar built to serve guests during a major tennis championship, the project used nine WareLight BEAMPEND Series LED round pendants — five 48-inch and four 36-inch — suspended from the structural deck and dropped through a slatted baffle ceiling so each ring lands just below the finished ceiling line.

How These Pendants Get the Flush Look

BEAMPEND pendants don't surface mount — but with a little creativity in the install, they can absolutely look like they do.

In these photos the rings appear to sit flat against the ceiling. What is actually happening is a suspended installation with a very short drop. The pendants hang from the structural deck above the slatted baffle ceiling, with the suspension cable and power feed run down through the gaps between baffles. The drop is set so each ring finishes just below the slat line. From the floor it reads as flush; structurally, the fixture is carried entirely by the deck above and puts no load on the baffles.

It is a clean trick and it travels well — the same approach works under any open ceiling system where you can get above the finish. Three things to line up before you order: access above the finished ceiling, a structural attachment point, and a gap the cable can pass through.

The Challenge: A Bar With a Deadline at Both Ends

Temporary hospitality builds compress everything. There is no commissioning period and no second phase — the space opens on a fixed date, serves guests for the run of the event, and then comes down. Anything that needs adjusting after the first night is already too late.

That puts unusual weight on the lighting. In a small bar with a bright, high-contrast interior, the ceiling is one of the few surfaces left to work with. Fixtures there have to carry the visual identity of the space, because there is no time to build character any other way.

The ceiling itself was the constraint. A slatted baffle system looks clean and does useful acoustic work in a room with hard surfaces and a lot of conversation, but it is a finish, not a structure. Baffles will not hold a 48-inch pendant. Any fixture over that bar had to be carried by the deck above and threaded through.

And because the fixtures were bought rather than rented, they had to be worth owning after the event — standard commercial specs, not disposable event hardware.

The Solution: One Series, Two Sizes

Warehouse Lighting supplied nine BEAMPEND Series LED round pendants in white: five 48-inch models and four 36-inch models.

Two ring sizes in one ceiling looks excellent. The varying diameters give the room a visual rhythm a single repeated fixture cannot, and it is a combination we see customers reach for again and again — it works in almost any space with an interesting ceiling.

There is practical logic underneath the look, too. Two sizes rather than one is a sensible answer to an irregular room: the larger rings sit where the ceiling opens up and the space needs the most output, while the smaller ones fit the tighter runs where a 48-inch fixture would crowd the slats.

What keeps a mixed-size layout from looking accidental is everything the two fixtures have in common. Both are the same series, the same white finish, the same ring profile, and both offer the same four CCT settings — so they can be set to identical color temperature at install. Match those and varying diameters read as rhythm. Miss them and the ceiling looks like leftovers.

Both sizes also carry selectable wattage and 0–10V dimming, worth having in a bar that runs through daytime and evening service. Output and color temperature are set at the fixture during install rather than fixed at the time of order — useful when a space is being commissioned in a hurry and there is no chance to reorder.

48" BEAMPEND Round Pendant — five units. Wattage field-selectable at 80, 90 or 100W and CCT at 3000K, 3500K, 4000K or 5000K, delivering up to 10,000 lumens at the top setting. Opal lens for diffused downward output, 0–10V dimming, 120–277V input, canopy kit included. At 48 inches you can specify this opal-lens model in white, or the newer direct/indirect generation in black.

36" BEAMPEND Round Pendant — four units. Wattage selectable at 40, 60 or 80W and the same four CCT settings, rated at 100 lumens per watt for up to 8,000 lumens. 0–10V dimming, 120–277V input, canopy kit included, white or black finish. This model has adjustable direct/indirect distribution.

Both ship with the canopy kit needed to hang them. Neither includes a surface-mount option, because none exists for this series.

One thing to check when specifying: light distribution is not identical across every diameter, since the range is moving toward direct/indirect as newer generations arrive. The 36-inch is direct/indirect. At 48 inches, the opal-lens version is a downlight and the newer generation is direct/indirect. Confirm the distribution on the exact model you are ordering rather than assuming it carries across the whole series.

The series also includes a 24-inch model at up to 4,000 lumens, and RGBW versions in 24-inch and 48-inch where full color control is wanted — worth knowing for event work, where brand color is often part of the build.

The Results

The finished bar reads as a permanent build rather than a temporary one, which is the whole objective. The rings are the first thing a guest notices on entry and the element that makes the ceiling look designed instead of assembled. Two diameters at two output levels give the room even light on the bar and floor without the flat, evenly-spaced look of a fixture grid.

The practical outcome is just as relevant. Because the pendants were suspended from the deck rather than fixed to the ceiling finish, the install was reversible — nothing was cut into or loaded onto the baffle system. And because they are standard commercial fixtures on standard voltage with standard dimming, they carry the same specifications as anything you would put in a permanent restaurant or hotel.

Specifying Lighting for Events and Temporary Builds

Pop-ups, activations, hospitality suites and event bars share a set of constraints that permanent projects do not:

Visual impact has to be immediate: there is no time for a space to grow on people, so fixtures with real form do more work than fixtures that just deliver light.
Mixing diameters is worth considering: two ring sizes from one series give a small room rhythm and let you match output to different areas of the ceiling.
The ceiling is often a finish, not a structure: baffles, stretched fabric, and temporary grids will not carry a large pendant. Identify the structural attachment point before selecting the fixture.
Installs should be reversible: suspending from the deck above and dropping through leaves the finished ceiling intact.
Check distribution on the exact model: a fixture family may offer direct/indirect in some versions and downlight-only in others. Confirm before ordering.
Selectable wattage and CCT reduce risk: when commissioning happens in a single day, being able to adjust output at the fixture beats discovering the specification was wrong.
Buy fixtures worth keeping: commercial-grade pendants on 120–277V with 0–10V dimming can be redeployed into a permanent space afterward. Event-specific hardware cannot.
Consider RGBW where brand color matters: a tunable fixture can carry a sponsor or brand palette without gels or wraps.

Can BEAMPEND round pendants be surface mounted?

No. BEAMPEND Series round pendants are suspended fixtures only. There is no surface-mount, flush-mount or ceiling-mount version of the product. Each fixture ships with a canopy kit for suspended installation. In photographs the rings can appear to sit flat against a ceiling, but that is a suspended install with a very short drop — the fixture is still carried by the structure above.

How do you hang a pendant light from a slatted or baffle ceiling?

You do not hang it from the baffles. Slatted and baffle ceilings are architectural finishes and are not rated to carry fixture weight. The pendant is suspended from the structural deck or joists above, and the suspension cable and power feed are run down through the gaps between baffles. Setting the drop so the fixture finishes just below the slat line makes it read as flush from the floor. This requires access above the finished ceiling and a suitable structural attachment point, so confirm both before ordering.

What lighting works best for a temporary bar or event space?

Fixtures with strong visual form, because a temporary space has no time to establish character any other way. Round pendants are common in event hospitality for that reason — the ring shape gives a small room a focal point immediately. Practical requirements matter just as much: reversible mounting that leaves the finished ceiling intact, selectable wattage and CCT so output can be adjusted during a compressed commissioning window, and commercial-grade specs so the fixtures can be redeployed once the event ends.

Can you mix different pendant sizes in the same room?

Yes, and it usually looks better than a single repeated size. Mixing diameters is one of the most common things we see customers do with round pendants: the varying ring sizes give a ceiling rhythm, and they let you put more output where the room needs it and less where it does not. In an irregular space it is also the practical choice — larger fixtures where the ceiling opens up, smaller ones where the space tightens. What makes it look deliberate rather than accidental is consistency in everything else: keep the fixtures within the same series so the profile matches, specify one finish across all of them, and set every fixture to the same color temperature at install.

What is a direct/indirect pendant, and when do you need one?

A direct/indirect fixture emits light both downward for task and floor illumination and upward onto the ceiling. The upward component is worth specifying whenever the ceiling would otherwise read as a dark void — exposed structure, painted-black plenums, or slatted baffle systems where bottom-only lighting turns the gaps into dark slots. Distribution is not uniform across every version of a fixture family, so check the specific model: in the BEAMPEND Series the 36-inch is direct/indirect, while at 48 inches the opal-lens version is a downlight and the newer generation is direct/indirect.

Can round pendants carry a brand color for an event?

Yes, with an RGBW model. The BEAMPEND Series includes RGBW versions in 24-inch and 48-inch diameters with full color plus tunable white, so a fixture can hold a sponsor or brand palette during an event and revert to standard white light afterward. That avoids gels, wraps or separate color-wash fixtures.

What color temperature suits a bar or lounge?

Bars and lounges generally sit at the warm end, around 3000K, which flatters interiors and feels comfortable to linger in. Higher settings around 4000K read as more functional and are better suited to service areas behind the bar.
