What is recessed lighting?
Recessed lighting is the use of light fixtures which are installed into an opening in a ceiling usually at evenly spaced intervals. These recessed can lights are commonly referred to as new construction housing. When recessed lights are installed this way, they create patterns of ambient light shining from the hole in the ceiling, concentrating the light in a downward direction much like a broad floodlight or even narrow spotlights. There are three main components to recessed lighting:
Housing
The housing is the lighting fixture itself that is installed into the ceiling and holds the lamp holder.
Trim
The trim is the visible portion of the light. It is the insert that is seen when looking up into the fixture, and also includes the thin lining around the edge of the light. Trims can be baffles, lens,luminous, adjustable eyeballs and gimbals.
Bulbs
There are many different types of bulbs that can be inserted into recessed lighting fixtures, with the amount of heat generated by the bulb being a unique consideration. Here is a sampling of what various recessed lighting parts look like:
Where is recessed lighting used?
Recessed can lights are used for task lighting, decorative lighting, area lighting or even shower lighting. Can lights as they are often referred to, are used in commercial and residential settings to add a decorative flair to an existing ceiling, sloped ceiling, or any room. What are the benefits of LED Can Lights?
LED downlights are an excellent alternative to incandescent light bulbs. They use less energy than their incandescent counterparts, which means fewer energy bills. LEDs also last longer than other types of lighting, with the average LED light lasting for 11 years when used for twelve hours a day. An added benefit of LED downlights is that they do not produce any harmful materials, unlike incandescent and fluorescent tubes, which contain mercury, which must be disposed of properly.
LED recessed lighting technology has developed to the point that it has overcome most of the early drawbacks of LED technologies. Lighting quality is much better in terms of color rendering, color temperature and lumen output (compared to wattage used). LED high hat lights have a much lengthier lifetime which means that the lights need to be replaced less often than other types. This is particularly important when it comes to ceiling lighting which may make it difficult to reach the fixtures.
Although LED lighting is more costly at the outset upon point of purchase, costs are more than made up over the long term due to the fact that they utilize much less energy than conventional lights. This saves on utility costs over time. They also don’t waste energy emitted as heat.
