Gun Range Lighting
Every location has its own lighting requirements. A gun rage is a location where lighting is absolutely critical. Each area of the range has different needs in terms of illumination solutions. Here are a few tips for achieving proper lighting for gun ranges.
1. Staging area should be well lit
Since this where firearms are reloaded, this area needs bright lighting solutions for the best visibility. While you may be tempted to go as high in lumen output as possible, don’t go that route. When you overdo it with lumens, you can actually create a blinding effect that makes it harder for the eyes to adjust from the staging area to the darker area of the downrange. The goal should be to choose mid to lower end high range lumen output and couple that with fixtures that offer a focused instead of widespread beam scope.
2. Stall lighting needs to be free of glares
Glares can be a big problem in an area where visibility is key. A great way to avoid this problem is to choose fixtures with a good mix of up light and down light. Another option is to choose an option with a built-in reflector to help cast the light downward while absorbing some of the glare. You should also be aware of where the light spread will be cast to avoid any bounce back glares such as a light directed at a metal surface which will give too much glare as a result.
3. Reduce shadows in the downrange
While lighting doesn’t need to exceptionally bright in the downrange area, you don’t want it to be so shadowy that every shot is a near miss. The light should be cast so it focuses on the target and the shadows fall between the rows instead of directly on a target.
4. Use a control system or timers
As with any type of lighting system, timers and controls are a great way to save on utility costs. For instance, look at installing timers to shut off at the end of the business day, as well as options which will turn on at the start of day. You can also install timers so that when a lane isn’t being used, the lights are inactive.
5. Add practical elements for law enforcement professionals
A great way to use lighting to the advantage of your LEO patrons is to add some blue, red, and white lights. These lights can be set up to mimic emergency vehicle lights which is a great way for law enforcement officers to hone their skills under sensory distractions.
