Locker rooms are one of the more demanding spaces in a fitness facility to light. A single room can combine mirrors, wet showers, a dry sauna, and narrow aisles between locker banks, and each of those conditions pulls the specification in a different direction. Getting it wrong shows up fast: members read a dim, patchy locker room as an unclean one, and dark aisles are where both the security complaints and the incident reports come from.

Control Glare Around Mirrors
Locker rooms have more reflective surface per square foot than almost any other space in the building. Mirrors, tile, polished lockers, and wet floors all bounce light, and a fixture layout that would be fine in an office produces disabling glare here.
Two things help most. First, use diffused or lensed optics rather than bare-aperture fixtures, so the source itself is never directly visible in a mirror. Second, aim the light at the wall above the mirror line rather than straight down onto the reflective surface. Grooming areas are the exception to the general light level: members are checking their appearance, so bump these to 20–30 fc and specify 90+ CRI so skin tones render accurately.
Choose the Right Color Temperature
Color temperature describes how warm or cool the light appears. Warm light sits toward the yellow end, cool light toward blue-white. Locker rooms sit in a narrow acceptable band: too warm and the space reads dingy, as though something is being covered up; too cool and it feels clinical and harsh.
Aim for 3500–4000K throughout the main locker and grooming areas. Just as important, keep the color temperature consistent across every fixture in the room. Mismatched CCT between the aisle lighting and the vanity lighting is one of the most common and most visible errors in a phased retrofit, since replacement fixtures rarely match what was installed years earlier.
Mix Fixture Types by Zone
Recessed fixtures are the default for locker rooms. They keep the ceiling plane clean, stay out of the way in tight aisles, and are harder to damage or tamper with than surface or pendant fixtures. LED wafer lights install into shallow plenums where a full housing will not fit, and 4 inch and 6 inch recessed can housings cover standard new construction. For drop-ceiling locker rooms, recessed flat panels and troffers give broad, even coverage.
Wall sconces work as a supplement rather than a primary source. Their value is filling the vertical plane in aisles, where a purely overhead layout leaves shadows on lower lockers and on people's faces. A layout combining recessed downlights on the ceiling with sconces at the ends of locker banks solves the dark-aisle problem better than adding more ceiling fixtures.
Showers and Restrooms Need the Right Rating
This is the part of a locker room specification most often gotten wrong, and the failure mode is electrical rather than cosmetic.
Restrooms with normal ventilation generally need damp-location listed fixtures. Shower areas need wet-location listing, typically IP65 or better, with proper gasketing. A recessed housing is not automatically suitable just because it is recessed. Standard recessed troffers installed in a shower ceiling will admit moisture, corrode, and fail, and they will do it faster than the warranty period.
LED vapor tight fixtures are the standard answer for shower rooms and any area subject to direct spray or persistent humidity. Place fixtures over the walkway between stalls rather than directly above each stall head, so maintenance access does not require entering a wet enclosure. Saunas and Steam Rooms
Saunas and steam rooms have different requirements despite often sitting side by side.
A sauna is a dry heat environment, frequently running 160–190°F. The fixture needs to be rated for that ambient temperature; standard LED drivers are not, and running them above their rated ambient shortens life dramatically or triggers thermal shutdown. Steam rooms add saturated moisture on top of heat, so those fixtures need both wet-location listing and a temperature rating. Check both specifications on the datasheet, not just one.
For both spaces, keep output low. These are relaxation environments, and the goal is enough light to move safely, not task-level illuminance. Around 5–10 fc at 2700K is appropriate. Recessed or flush-mounted fixtures are preferable, both for protection and because there is nothing to catch on in a small enclosure.
Why LED for Locker Rooms
Locker rooms typically run long hours, often the full operating day, which makes the energy difference between LED and legacy fluorescent or incandescent significant on the utility bill. Beyond that, the practical argument is maintenance access: replacing a failed lamp in a shower ceiling or a sauna means shutting the area down and getting a ladder into a wet or hot space. Longer service life directly reduces how often that happens.
