Warehouse Lighting

Warehouse Lighting

When it comes to lighting, it serves several purposes. The right lighting can help improve visibility in a workspace, eliminate accidents and injuries, and create a clean appearance to help set high standards. For warehouse lighting application suggestions, there are a few key aspects to consider in terms of common lighting concerns for this area of lighting.

The three areas to focus on are:

  • Glare
  • Spacing
  • Efficiency

Glare

One of the more important parts of warehouse lighting is to find ways to reduce glare. Glare can lead to a lack of visibility on work tasks as well as hinder sight during critical tasks that may lead to injury. There are several ways to cut down on glare in the warehouse setting.

  • If you are using a HID or any high-intensity lighting solution, it is recommended to install shields around the lamp. This will help reduce glare against other objects while helping to direct light where you need it.
  • Another way to prevent glare is with the use of LED lights. They are known for emitting a clear, white light free from shadowy areas and will help reduce glare.
  • Consider diffusers to redirect the glare more evenly throughout the space instead of one concentrated area.

Spacing

Another important consideration in terms of warehouse lighting application is spacing. While manufacturers have a suggested spacing guideline on their products, there is usually wiggle room available to accommodate your space.

  • When considering that most task will be performed in a vertical task plane, aim to provide 20-30 foot candles of illumination for adequate light and let this be your guide for spacing.
  • Know that the spacing will have a role in efficiency. If you have a light with x amount of lumen output per unit of measure, the higher you mount the light, the more spread out that lumen output will become. Make sure you account for this change in lumen scope when spacing.

Efficiency

You should also consider the efficiency of the lights for your space. When choosing lighting, it makes sense you would want the lighting option that will give you the most lumen output with the lowest energy consumption. While there are many fluorescent options that are making great strides in efficiency compared to the previous generations, it is still hard to top the power of an LED. This type of lighting solution will burn for thousands of hours before needing replacement with a lower heat temperature and no start-up time. LED lights may cost more upfront compared to fluorescent, but they are longer lasting for a better value. When shopping for efficiency, carefully consider the following factors:

  • Burn Time
  • Average Life Rating
  • Lumen Output

The capacities of each factor will depend greatly on your space and lighting needs.

In Conclusion

Whether you choose LED or fluorescent options, it should be noted there are several different types of lighting sources needed and you can incorporate both types of lighting to fit your needs. From emergency lights and workstation lights to overhead lights and walkways, there are many areas in need of proper lighting. The most important aspect of choosing warehouse lighting is that it works for your location.
