Canless recessed lights combine the LED, driver, and trim in one slim fixture with a junction box, so there is no housing to buy or install. Canless is faster to install and fits shallower ceilings. A housing makes sense when you want to swap the light source or trim later.

Do canless recessed lights need a junction box?

Yes. Every canless fixture needs a junction box for the wiring connection. The box is either integrated with the fixture or remote, connected to the fixture by a short cable. The box has to stay accessible, so confirm the wiring method and access requirements with your electrician and local code.

Are canless recessed lights IC-rated?
