Why Troffer Lights Still Dominate Commercial Spaces
Troffer lights fit into modular drop ceiling grids, also called T-bar or suspended ceilings. The name comes from "trough" and "coffer," which describe the recessed housing. They sit flush in the ceiling grid, directing light downward into the space without the visual clutter of exposed pendants or surface-mount strips.
Most commercial buildings you walk into, offices, schools, hospitals, retail spaces, government facilities, are lit with troffers. They're the default for a reason: they're efficient, clean, and well-suited to the kind of broad, even illumination those environments need.
LED vs. Fluorescent Troffer Lights
If you're still quoting fluorescent troffer lights on retrofit jobs, it's worth having the LED conversation with your client. Here's why they should make the switch:
- Energy use: LED troffers use up to 60% less energy than equivalent fluorescent fixtures, which translates directly to lower utility bills.
- Lifespan: Integrated LED troffers are typically rated for 50,000 hours or more, which is considerably longer than standard fluorescent sources.
- Light quality: LED delivers higher CRI and more consistent color temperature throughout the life of the fixture. Fluorescents shift and dim over time.
- Maintenance: Integrated LED fixtures have no tubes to re-lamp and no ballasts to swap out; LED-ready troffer options using LED tubes also dramatically reduce maintenance frequency.

Troffer Sizes: 1x4, 2x2, and 2x4
- 2x4 troffers are the most common in commercial spaces. They fit standard 2x4 ceiling grid openings and deliver the widest light spread per fixture, making them the go-to for open offices, classrooms, and hallways.
- 2x2 troffers work well in spaces with tighter ceiling grids or where a more modular, architectural look is preferred, such as conference rooms, healthcare exam rooms, and retail environments.
- 1x4 troffers are the right call for narrow corridors, shallow T-bar ceilings, or spaces where a longer, slimmer fixture fits the layout better.
Three Mounting Options
- Grid/lay-in mount: The standard drop-in installation for T-bar ceilings. The fixture rests in the ceiling grid opening.
- Surface mount: For spaces without a drop ceiling, select troffer fixtures can be mounted directly to a hard ceiling surface.
- Suspended/hanging troffer lights: Some models can be hung from the ceiling with chains or cables for an exposed, industrial-meets-commercial aesthetic, or where ceiling height makes surface mounting impractical.
Lens and Diffuser Options
- Center basket: The most common style; bounces light off an internal reflector for diffused, even illumination with a clean appearance.
- Parabolic louvers: Cell-based aluminum louvers that cut glare and provide more directed light output; ideal for computer-heavy offices and spaces where visual comfort is critical.
- Prismatic lens: A classic diffuser lens that scatters light broadly; common in schools and general commercial applications.

What's the difference between a center basket troffer and a parabolic troffer?
A center basket troffer uses a basket diffuser to bounce light off an internal reflector, producing soft, even illumination. It's the most widely used style in general commercial applications. A parabolic troffer uses aluminum louvers divided into cells to control the direction of light and reduce glare. Parabolic fixtures are the better choice in environments with computer screens or where occupant visual comfort is a priority, such as offices and labs.
Are your LED troffers DLC-listed for utility rebates?
Many are; you'll see DLC and DLC Premium listings noted in the product certifications on individual product pages, and both qualify for rebates through most utility programs.
Do you carry troffer retrofit kits for existing fluorescent fixtures?
