Fabrication shops need reliable lighting sources, as it is difficult to do the required work when visibility is an issue. Improper lighting can also lead to costly accidents or mistakes. With the right lighting solutions in place, you can ensure a safe, productive work environment to keep your business on track. Here are a few tips for fabrication shop lighting options to make it easier to navigate this tricky variety of lighting.
1. Shop for Quality, Not Price
Too many people sacrifice quality to save a bit of money. Often, certain lighting solutions are more affordable initially because they are not as durable as the costlier options. For example, an LED option may cost more upfront than fluorescents, but that is because the LED will give you a better return on the initial investment than the fluorescent light. LEDs are the most efficient light source in terms of utility costs, output, and longevity, meaning you will save every month on the cost of electric and the bulbs will last longer than other options.
2. Check Ratings
Another good tip for fabrication shop lighting is to find the most durable options for your location. You want to check the IP rating on internationally manufactured lights and the NEMA rating on domestic lights, as well as the UL and DLC listings, to make sure you are getting a light that is best suited for your environment. For example, a light that is waterproof, dustproof, and shatterproof is a much better buy than one that doesn’t feature those protections.
3. Task Lighting
While general lighting is important, the most important variety of fabrication shop lighting will be that used in the work areas. Task lighting needs to be a priority of your work areas to improve visibility. When considering the lighting for this area, it is best to keep in mind the anticipated work plane. If you have work benches or work tables, you should calculate the necessary lumen output for task lighting. You want the room to be bright enough to see the work at hand, but not overly harsh to where it is painful for the eyes of workers. A general rule is to calculate one-foot candle of light density per square foot of space. It is also a good idea to allow for adjustable lighting options, such as dimmable lights, to let the lumen output fluctuate as needed.
Lighting is an essential part of any location. With a focus on illumination and efficiency, you can easily find numerous options that will meet the specific needs of your location.
