Motion-activated lighting does two things at once on a commercial property: it puts light where someone is walking, and it makes an approach visible when nobody expected to be seen. It also cuts running hours substantially, since the fixture is only at full output when something is actually happening.

The decisions that matter are the sensor type, the detection coverage, and how the sensor is set up once it is on the wall. This guide covers all three, plus the false-trigger problems that make badly configured installations useless.

How Motion Sensors Actually Work

Most outdoor motion fixtures use a passive infrared sensor, usually shortened to PIR. It does not emit anything — that is what "passive" means. It reads the infrared radiation in its field of view and watches for a change in the pattern.

A person walking across that field is warmer than the pavement behind them, so as they move from one detection zone to the next the sensor registers a shift and triggers the fixture. This has two consequences worth knowing:

  • Movement across the sensor triggers more reliably than movement toward it. Someone walking straight at the fixture crosses fewer zones, so a path approaching head-on is the hardest case. Aim the sensor across the route rather than along it.
  • It responds to heat difference, not just heat. On a very hot day, when surfaces approach body temperature, PIR sensitivity drops. That is a genuine limitation rather than a fault.

A photocell is a separate component that many fixtures also carry, and the two are frequently confused. A photocell measures ambient light and keeps the fixture off during daylight. Motion and photocell working together is the normal commercial arrangement — the fixture stays dark by day, and only responds to motion once it is dark enough to matter.

Three detection technologies turn up on commercial fixtures, and they behave differently enough to matter.

What to Look For

Beyond the sensor itself, these are the specifications that decide whether the installation works:

  • Detection range and coverage angle: stated on the spec sheet, usually as a distance and an arc. Check both against the area you need covered, and remember the range assumes clear line of sight.
  • Adjustable sensitivity and time delay: the two settings you will actually use after installation. Time delay determines how long the fixture stays at full output after the last detection — typically adjustable from under a minute to fifteen or more.
  • Beam angle of the fixture: separate from the sensor's detection angle, and easy to confuse. A wide beam suits general area coverage; narrower suits a specific approach or doorway.
  • Lumen output: commercial motion fixtures commonly run from around 1,800 up to 20,000 lumens or more depending on mounting height and coverage. Work from the area rather than picking the brightest available.
  • IP rating: IP65 is the practical baseline for an exposed outdoor fixture. Check the sensor housing is rated as well as the light itself — they are sometimes specified separately.
  • Housing and gaskets: a die-cast aluminium housing with quality gaskets is what determines whether the fixture is still working in ten years. Polycarbonate lenses handle impact better than glass where vehicles or equipment are nearby.
  • Multiple heads: useful at corners and entrances, where one mounting point and one sensor can cover two or three directions.

Avoiding False Triggers

A fixture that activates all night is worse than one that never activates — it wastes energy, annoys neighbours, and trains staff to ignore it. Most nuisance triggering comes from a handful of causes, and all of them are addressable at install:

  • Heat sources in the field of view. HVAC exhaust, extract vents and dryer outlets all move warm air, which is exactly what a PIR sensor is looking for. Aim away from them.
  • Passing traffic. Common with microwave sensors, which detect beyond the property line. Reduce sensitivity or switch to PIR or dual-technology.
  • Animals. Mounting higher and angling downward keeps small animals below the detection zone while still covering people.
  • Reflective surfaces. Glass, water and polished metal can reflect heat signatures back into the sensor from unexpected directions.
  • The fixture seeing its own light. Where a sensor is mounted close to the lamp head and something reflective sits in front of it, the fixture can retrigger itself and stay on indefinitely.

Mounting height is the single most useful adjustment. Too low and the sensor picks up everything at ground level; too high and detection range shrinks as the angle steepens. Between eight and twelve feet suits most commercial applications, and the spec sheet will state the optimum for that fixture.

Reducing sensitivity, raising the mounting height, or re-aiming away from the heat source resolves most cases. Where nuisance triggering persists, a dual-technology sensor requiring both PIR and microwave detection largely eliminates it.

Should security lights be motion-activated or stay on all night?

For most commercial sites a bi-level arrangement beats either extreme — the fixture runs at reduced output continuously and steps to full on detection. That matters most where CCTV is installed, because a camera needs baseline light to record anything before the sensor triggers. Pure motion activation saves the most energy but leaves the scene dark until something happens; dusk-to-dawn gives constant coverage at the highest running cost.

Does frequent switching shorten LED fixture life?

Not meaningfully. Unlike metal halide or fluorescent, where each start cycle degrades the lamp, LED tolerates frequent switching without significant impact on lifespan. That is precisely why motion control became practical on commercial fixtures — an HID fixture cannot be cycled this way, both because of the warm-up delay and because the switching would shorten lamp life considerably.
