Factors to Consider
Brightness is the obvious spec and rarely the deciding one. Five things matter more in practice.
Lumen Output and Efficacy
Modern flood lights are LED almost without exception. Look at luminous efficacy — lumens per watt — rather than wattage alone, since that is the figure that determines your running cost. Colour temperature matters too: warmer output reads softer on a building facade, cooler output reads crisper for security and task areas.
Application
The intended use drives everything else. A landscape fitting accentuating a specimen tree and a security fixture covering a loading yard have almost nothing in common beyond the word "flood." Landscape work prioritises beam control and appearance; security work prioritises coverage and output.
Beam Angle
Beam angle decides how the light is distributed. A narrow beam concentrates output on a specific target, which suits architectural features and signage. A wide beam spreads it broadly, which suits general area coverage and security. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a correctly specified fixture underperforms.
Form Factor and Mounting
Consider size, shape and how the fixture attaches. Compact housings suit discreet installations where the fixture should not be noticed; larger housings suit pole and bracket mounting over open areas. Check the mounting hardware against what is already on site before ordering.
Weather Resistance
Outdoor fixtures need an appropriate IP rating for resistance to dust and water ingress — the Ingress Protection scale is the standard measure. IP65 handles driven rain and wash-down; higher ratings cover harsher exposure. Where a fixture sits within reach of vehicles or equipment, look at the impact rating as well.
LED or Halogen?
Halogen is still found on older installations, and the comparison is worth making if you are costing a replacement against keeping what is there.
- Energy: LED draws substantially less power for the same light output, which is where the running-cost difference comes from.
- Lifespan: commercial LED fixtures are commonly rated between 50,000 and 100,000 hours. Halogen lamps typically last 1,000 to 5,000. On a pole-mounted fixture, the difference in re-lamping visits usually outweighs the energy saving.
- Heat: halogen converts a large share of its energy to heat rather than light, which is both a safety consideration and the reason for the efficiency gap.
- Control: LED dims, switches instantly with no warm-up, and works with occupancy sensors. Halogen does none of that well.
- Colour rendering: LED options are available across a wide CRI range, which matters where colour accuracy affects the work or the appearance of a building.
- Up-front cost: LED costs more to buy. On a commercial installation the maintenance saving generally settles the argument before the energy saving does.
Watts to Lumens
Halogen output was quoted in watts; LED is quoted in lumens. If you are replacing existing fixtures, work from these rough equivalents:
- 100 watts halogen ≈ 2,000 lumens
- 250 watts halogen ≈ 5,000 lumens
- 500 watts halogen ≈ 10,000 lumens
- 1,000 watts halogen ≈ 20,000 lumens
Treat those as a starting point and confirm against the lumen figure on each spec sheet, since fixture optics affect how much of that output reaches the target.

Which fixture suits the job depends on the size of the area, the mounting position and what the light is meant to do.
Commercial Flood Lights
Commercial outdoor flood lights are the general-purpose option — bright, even coverage over large areas like parking lots, building exteriors and yards. Adjustable mounting and a choice of beam angles make them adaptable to most sites, and many carry dimming and photocell options.
Shoebox Area Lights
LED shoebox fixtures are pole-mounted and designed for wide, uniform coverage over open ground, which makes them the standard choice for parking lots and area lighting. Where the run is linear rather than open — an access road or perimeter drive — cobra head fixtures distribute light along the length instead.
Stadium and Sports Lighting
LED stadium lights handle the output and uniformity that competitive play requires, and they hold performance across temperature swings. Typical applications include:

Sports lighting is one area where a photometric layout is worth commissioning rather than estimating — governing bodies often specify minimum light levels and uniformity ratios for competitive play.
Landscape and Accent Flood Lights
Landscape and bullet flood lights are the compact end of the range, built for highlighting planting, architectural detail and signage rather than covering ground. They mount to a variety of surfaces and are wet-listed for outdoor use.
Colored flood lights serve a different purpose again — adding a deliberate wash of colour to a facade, an auditorium or an event space. They come most commonly in blue, red, green and amber. For wayfinding after dark, sign lighting is worth specifying alongside.
Features Worth Specifying
Beyond the fixture itself, a few options change how well the installation works day to day:
- Integrated LED: the diodes are part of the fixture rather than a replaceable lamp. That allows better thermal management and a slimmer housing, and removes lamp replacement from the maintenance schedule — the fixture is replaced as a unit at end of life.
- Motion sensors: useful for security applications, where full output only when something moves cuts both energy use and light pollution. Detection range and time delay are usually adjustable.
- Dimming: lets you tune output after installation. Check the dimming protocol on the spec sheet — commonly 0-10V on commercial fixtures — and match it to the control being installed, or you get flicker at the bottom of the range.
- Photocells: switch the fixture on at dusk and off at dawn automatically, adjusting for overcast days in a way a timer cannot. Suits security lighting and landscape installations where nobody is going to operate a switch.
- IP and impact ratings: confirm both against the actual exposure. A fixture on a building soffit and one on a bollard in a service yard face very different conditions.

Yes. The same fixtures work in both settings, though the scale differs — a residential driveway needs a fraction of the output a commercial yard does. For a home, look at lower-lumen fixtures with a motion sensor rather than the high-output models specified for parking lots, and consider warmer colour temperatures where the light is visible from living areas.
How are landscape flood lights different from regular flood lights?
Landscape fittings are smaller, lower output, and built to be discreet — the fixture is meant to disappear while the thing it lights is seen.
