Lighting plays a role in our moods. While that isn’t news to anyone, the idea of how lighting affects shoppers is still being studied. However, we all know most consumers have mixed feelings about the fitting room area. Here are a few tips on mastering mirrored lights in retail settings.
1. Keep skin tones in mind
The matter of color temperature is crucial in mirrored lights in retail settings. If the color temperature is too warm, it will make everything look dingy whereas a too cool temperature will wash out the tones. It is important to find the best option which is usually a middle ground closer to white tones such as a 3500K to 4000K in temperature. Of course, the temperature is just one small part of the overall effect.
2. Avoid glares hitting the mirror
If you are using lights and mirrors together, it is always crucial to ensure glares are avoided. One great way to do so is to invest in a reflector as part of the fixture design. This can eliminate the concentration of the beam and direct it to an appropriate place within the fixture itself. Another option is to install diffusers which can cast a gentler light spread.
3. Avoid shadows
On the flip side of things being too bright and creating a glare, you also want to avoid shadows. This can be avoided by using fixtures which offer an equal balance of up light and down light to create a good balance, as well as focusing on the beam spread and position of the fixture.
4. Don’t use overhead lighting with mirrors
The best tip is to use LED fixtures mounted to both sides of the mirror for the best effect. With overhead fixtures, the majority of the light spreads downward which can be unflattering for your shoppers. The lights should be placed at eye level as much as possible to avoid unflattering shadows.
5. Get rid of fluorescent altogether
Another aspect that creates shadows is the type of the bulb. Fluorescent fixtures are notorious for shadows whereas LED is practically shadow free. LED is also a more efficient solution which will help your business out budget-wise.
